Welcomes and introduction: What’s the big thing that happened this week? Newsishness? Hurricane? Library news? Indiana Library Federation Conference Unshelved says there’s an epidemic of bacon as bookmarks. unshelved.com OWS Library destroyed: http://peopleslibrary.wordpress.com/ The UPS Store Re: Occupy Wall Street Attn: The People's Library 118A Fulton St. #205 New York, NY 10038 Item #1: Online tutorials Free Tools: Slideshare (http://www.slideshare.net) (Pro version gives you more options) Prezi (http://www.prezi.com) Jing (http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html) Screencast-O-Matic (http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/) Web-based file converter: http://www.convertfiles.com/ and Zamzar (http://www.zamzar.com) Paid Tools: Jing Pro (http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html) Camtasia (http://www.techsmith.com/Camtasia) Captivate (http://www.adobe.com/products/captivate.html) Prezi tips: Don’t make your audience motion sick. Movement is semantic. We (western society) are used to progress being from left to right. You can treat a prezi as a glorified slide deck or use it more like a mind map. Check out Maria Andersen’s prezis for an innovative use of the tool (example - http://prezi.com/gsoot_1arnmk/future-proof-your-education/) Social Studies using them as a way to illustrate history. Slide deck vs. screencast Slide deck - better for concept instruction (subject headings, research process, etc.) Screencast - process instruction (how to export to RefWorks from PubMed, etc.) How to create a good slide deck/screencast Be concise. Too many words on a slide loses the audience’s attention. Same goes for too long of a screencast. If doing a screencast, plan out what you want to click on and say. Start with a visually-interesting opening slide/screen. Have a color scheme/theme. Don’t use more than two fonts. Will you be narrating? This will tell you whether the slides need to be able to standalone or serve as a support.
