Further to your discussion on Google Alerts, while I have alerts set up for interests that are only occasionally posted online to come into my email, I make use of the RSS option to send research alerts to Google Reader.  This keeps it out of my mail and makes the research easily accessible via Feedly, Flipboard or wherever the rss feed is made available.
